Therapeutic Options for Canine Osteoarthritis
Abstract: The role of Disease-Modifying Osteoarthritis Drugs. A wide variety of clinical cases of canine OA typical of the caseload seen in a small animal practice was studied. Evidence was established that the Adequan Canine® (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan or PSGAG) treated group versus placebo showed a trend of greater percent improvement in the scores for each parameter: Lameness at a walk, lameness at a trot, range of motion, pain, disability, and total orthopedic score.

The Distribution of Radiolabeled PSGAG in Canine Synovial Fluid and Articular Cartilage after Intramuscular Injection of3 HPSGAG.
This study supports therapeutic use of 2mg/lb of bodyweight by providing evidence of effective concentrations of PSGAG adequate for the drug's disease modifying mechanisms in canine synovial fluid within 2 hours of injections and maintaining these levels in the articular cartilage of inflamed joints for at least 72 hours.
